India Progresses towards Polio Eradication
 
Post : Surveillance Medical Officers (SMO's)  
Key Responsibilities would include :
  • Provide training, motivation, technical and logistic assistance to government counterparts (including District Immunization Officers and State EPI Officers) as required to promote polio eradication activities, e.g. Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance and supplementary immunization campaigns.
  • Plan, organize and conduct meetings with government officials, professional organizations, hospitals and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to promote polio eradication activities.
  • Maintain, analyse, interpret and update immunization and data.
  • Manage a unit office at district level, including supervision of office staff (assistant, driver).
  • Submit reports as per project guidelines.

The job would require extensive travelling to remote locations.

Essential Qualifications and Skills :

Candidates must possess a MBBS degree and knowledge of basic computer applications. They should have excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to motivate and to enlist support and cooperation from Govt. counterparts and key stakeholders..

Desirable Qualifications :

Previous experience in implementing a public health programme; a diploma/degree in public health or preventive and social medicine would be an advantage.

Terms and Conditions :

The selected candidates will be recruited on a contract through December 2007. Contract renewal will be based on a performance evaluation. Gross annual salary is approximately Rs. 7 lakh and is subject to taxation as per Indian law.
